The Ewha Center for Global Social Responsibility (Director: Ha EunHee) held a sustainability education session for alumni of Ewha Womans University College of Medicine and School of Medicine on Saturday, July 4, at the ECC Conference Hall. The session was held under the theme “From Good Doctor to Green Doctor – New Roles for Physicians and Sustainable Healthcare in the Era of Planetary Health.”
The educational session was designed to help healthcare professionals understand the impact of the climate crisis and environmental changes on human health and to share ways to implement ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in medical practice. Ha EunHee, the founding director of the Ewha Center for Global Social Responsibility, served as the speaker and introduced the social role of healthcare professionals in the era of Planetary Health and the future of sustainable healthcare. During her lecture, Ha stated, “The standards of what makes a good doctor have not changed, but the environment surrounding patients is changing rapidly,” emphasizing that it is becoming increasingly important for healthcare professionals to go beyond treating diseases and understand and take action on the broader environmental factors that affect health.
Ha further explained that a “Green Doctor” is not an environmental activist, but a physician who practices better healthcare.
She emphasized that appropriate care, prevention-oriented healthcare, and environmentally conscious medical practices can contribute to improving both patients’ health and the sustainability of healthcare. She also highlighted that ESG and the SDGs are not additional tasks, but values that expand healthcare professionals’ expertise and social responsibility, and that the healthcare sector is likewise a key factor in building a sustainable society.
The participating alumni had the opportunity to learn about domestic and international trends in Planetary Health and sustainable healthcare and to discuss practical ESG initiatives that can be implemented in medical settings, as well as the role of healthcare professionals.
The Ewha Center for Global Social Responsibility plans to continue expanding ESG, SDGs, and sustainability education for members of the university community, including students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Through various educational initiatives and programs, the Center will continue to strengthen understanding of and capacity for sustainability while promoting the values of ESG and the SDGs throughout the university and local community.
