Overview
Ewha Womans University Graduate School of Nursing traces its origins to the Boguyeogwan Training School for Nurses, established in 1903 as the first formal nursing education institution in Korea. Building upon this historic foundation, Ewha’s nursing education evolved through successive institutional developments, including the Department of Nursing Welfare within Haengnimwon in 1947 and the School of Nursing Education in 1950. In 1955, Ewha established the first undergraduate nursing program in Korea, and in 1960 it launched a master’s program within the general graduate school, thereby opening a new chapter in the advancement of nursing education in the country. As the birthplace and a leading institution of nursing education in Korea, Ewha Womans University has continuously advanced its programs to meet the changing demands of society and healthcare systems. In 2004, the university pioneered the establishment of a master’s-level Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) program in Korea, producing highly skilled nursing professionals equipped with advanced clinical expertise required in contemporary healthcare settings. With the inauguration of the Graduate School of Nursing in 2026, this program was integrated and transferred to the new graduate school, further strengthening the systematic structure and professional rigor of advanced practice nursing education. The Graduate School of Nursing is committed to providing a structured educational pathway through which practicing nurses can develop into advanced practice professionals. In response to rapidly evolving healthcare environments—including population aging and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases—the school aims to cultivate nursing professionals capable of delivering patient-centered, high-acuity care and sophisticated clinical decision-making. To lead the future of healthcare, the Graduate School has also established new academic tracks in Clinical Nursing Education, Global Health and Nursing Policy, and Precision Nursing. Through these programs, the school seeks to educate clinical education specialists, leaders in global health and health policy, and experts in precision nursing who utilize data and advanced technologies. These initiatives aim to expand the role of nursing beyond clinical practice to encompass education, policy development, and the emerging domains of future healthcare technologies. Grounded in the rich history and tradition of Ewha nursing education, the Ewha Womans University Graduate School of Nursing aspires to cultivate nursing leaders equipped with professional excellence and interdisciplinary perspectives, ultimately advancing beyond Korea to become a global leader in nursing education.
