College of Engineering

Overview

The College of Engineering was established in 1996 to meet the country's need for well-represented and highly-qualified female engineers. Careers in the field of engineering have been traditionally dominated by male engineers and considered unfit for female engineers. The changing working environment of the 21st century with the information and technological changes in society have allowed women to contribute their professional knowledge, creativity and imagination to display excellence and values in the field of engineering. This has created a social demand for female engineers to contribute to the development of society. In order to meet this social expectation, Ewha's College of Engineering is making every effort to nurture professional female engineers who can lead in the fields of modern science and technology.

Ewha’s College of Engineering is the world’s first women's college of engineering. It was built as a five-story building with a basement in July of 1996, on a 10,000 square meter plot of land, and was fully equipped with modern facilities. A new engineering building was built in September of 2008, to further advance Ewha’s goal of educating fully trained global female engineers. The modernized equipment in this building is substantially helping to enhance the quality of education and research at the college. In 2008, the college was divided into the Division of Computer and Electronic Engineering, the Division of Architecture, and the Division of Environmental and Food Science. There are approximately 1,400 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students enrolled in the College.
