The team led by Professor Seongjae Cho has been selected for the 2023 Next-generation Intelligent Semiconductor Technology (Device) Development Project. The team will conduct research on “developing high-density, low-power and non-volatile 3D vertical synapse arrays and architectures based on charge storage for on-chip learning” with a total research funding of KRW 2.75 billion by 2025. As the lead organization, Ewha’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering will oversee the general management of the project as well as the development and processing of flash memory synaptic cells. The project is participated in by research teams from seven universities in Korea. Professor Seongjae Cho expressed his hope for the project, remarking that the research will increase the standard of system autonomy while enabling the development of next-generation AI semiconductors that will approach a final form whose hardware is capable of establishing billions of AI parameters.

The team led by Professor Hyukjin Lee has been selected for the 2023 Genome Editing, Control and Restoration-based Technology Development Project to conduct research on the “development of an in-vivo genome-editing technologies based on next-generation lipid nanoparticles (LNPs)” with a total research funding amounting to KRW 2.2 billion over the next five years. Professor Hyukjin Lee of the College of Pharmacy will collaborate with researchers at Yonsei University and the bio-venture company ToolGen, Inc. to develop a mRNA/ LNP-based genome editing technology. Although mRNA/LNPs have been used as vaccines and therapeutics by global pharmaceutical companies such as Moderna, Pfizer and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, there is no precedent for the clinical application of LNPs as delivery agent to organs with the exception of the liver. Through this project, Professor Lee will develop LNPs as potential delivery systems for the eye and central nervous system, based on which he also plans to develop an in-vivo genome-editing technology.

The team led by Professor Kyung-Shik Shin has been selected for the 2023 AI Learning Data Construction Support Project. Professor Shin’s team will conduct research on “constructing comprehensive AI learning data to prevent mental and physical diseases related to parenting stress and promote healthy parenting” with a total project funding of KRW 1.7 billion. The 2023 AI Learning Data Construction Support Project was designed to build data to address important social problems facing our society, such as the declining birthrate and changing demographic structure. The Ewha research team will secure large-scale clinical composite data to comprehensively assess parenting stress for the first time in Korea. The project is led by Professor Kyung-Shik Shin from the Division of Business Administration as the principal investigator and participated in by Korea’s top researchers in the relevant areas, such as data science and brain science and medicine, including Ewha faculty from the Department of Pharmacy, the Ewha Brain Institute, the Division of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Medicine.

Meanwhile, the Department of Fashion Industry has been selected as a participating institution for the “3D data for traditional hanbok” category in the 2023 AI Learning Data Construction Support Project. Following in 2020 and 2022, the Department of Fashion Industry has been selected as a participating institution in 2023, dedicating its utmost efforts to nurturing talent in the fashion industry based on AI.
