Ewha Korean Cultural Research Institute (Director: Haiyoung Lee) has launched the ‘‘Korean Teacher Training Program” in Thailand. The opening ceremony, held on Feb 6, was participated by total 110 people including Mr. Lee Wook-heon(Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Thailand) and Dr. Wanna Chongdarakul(The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC)).

The project is a part of the Korean government’s “Teacher training program of Korean language for foreigners”. The Thai project is a cooperative project between the Korean Education Center in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University, Silpakorn University, and Ewha Womans University.

Thailand has seen a steady increase in demand for Korean language education among Asian countries. There are 165 Korean language education centers and 45,905 learners in Thailand as of 2020. Although there are already some temporary training programs for teachers, continuous and systematic programs have been in need.

In this "Korean Teacher Training Program," 70 Thai pre-teachers will participate in and will take courses from prominent professors in Korea, the U.S., and Thailand. They will also visit Korea and get on-site training.

Ewha Womans University has been planning the program, providing consulting to local universities, and plans to continue close cooperation with universities in Thailand by developing further online education contents, supporting real-time lectures, and hosting training seminar in Korea.

Director Haiyoung Lee said, "Korean language education in Thailand has achieved stable growth.” She expressed her expectation, saying, "With the training as well as the development of local secondary education sites in Thailand, we can expect a gradual growth of Korean education from elementary and secondary school to university."
