On September 30th, the Department of Music Therapy, Graduate School, held a Healing Concert as part of the Music & You Plus project, inviting individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and children living in residential care facilities. The Music & You Plus project began in November 2023 with a collaborative partnership between LG Uplus and the Department of Music Therapy. Since then, it has been implementing music therapy programs to provide psychological and emotional support for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities in the local community, as well as children residing at the Younrak Borinwon Child Welfare Facility in Yongsan District.

Over the past 11 months, more than 100 individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and children from residential care facilities have participated in this project. The program is led and supported by faculty from the Department of Music Therapy, as well as music therapy students and graduates. Through a variety of music activities, including musicals, instrument playing, and music making, the project offers therapeutic opportunities and emotional support through music to children, adolescents, and their caregivers.

This Healing Concert was organized to share the psychological resources and musical achievements gained through the program with the community. It was a meaningful event where not only the participants but also their families, therapists, and music therapy students came together to create a shared performance. In particular, the concert featured parents of individuals with developmental disabilities who participated in the program by challenging themselves to play musical instruments. Through their performances and songs, they shared a special experience of relieving parenting stress and fostering psychological connection through music.

Additionally, parents and children shared their musical achievements on stage and conveyed messages through videos and song lyrics, offering an emotional and heartfelt moment to all who attended the concert. This not only expanded the internal resources of the children with disabilities and their families who took the stage but also made a significant contribution to raising awareness of disabilities within the community.

Moving forward, the Department of Music Therapy plans to continue developing and supporting programs through this project that utilize the unique therapeutic power of music to assist diverse groups in the community in needs, enhancing their emotional well-being and social resources.
