Story of Young-gyun Na, Professor Emeritus at the Department of English Language and Literature

Young-gyun Na, Professor Emeritus at the Department of English Language and Literature (English Language and Literature, graduating class of 1949), donated KRW 100 million in commemoration of the department’s centennial anniversary. As a researcher and translator of modern English and American literature, Professor Na is the author of Studying Conrad and Understanding English and American Novels, and the translator of numerous works of English literature, such as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Jailbird. She served as a professor at the department for 35 years since 1959, as well as the first female president of the English Language and Literature Association of Korea.

Professor Na donated the fund to celebrate the department’s upcoming centennial anniversary in 2025. The fund will be used for various projects in commemoration of the department’s centennial anniversary, including a scholarship for students majoring in English Language and Literature. Her daughters, Sooyoung Chon, Professor Emeritus at the Department of English Language and Literature (English Language and Literature, graduating class of 1976), and Songmi Chon (English Language and Literature, graduating class of 1983), CEO of DeLite D&C, attended the fund delivery ceremony held at Ewha to present the fund on behalf of Professor Na.

Professor Chon remarked, “I am pleased to convey our family’s support to the Department of English Language and Literature at Ewha, an institution that holds special meaning for generations of my family as my mother and her three daughters including myself all graduated from the department.” She added “The Department of English Language and Literature under the College of Liberal Arts has long represented Ewha’s educational excellence, and I hope it will continue in its journey to establish itself as a true cornerstone of Ewha’s prestige as we commemorate its centennial anniversary.”

President Eun Mee Kim stated, “It has been truly heartwarming to see the immense pride felt by Professor Na toward the Department of English Language and Literature as one of Ewha’s most illustrious teachers,” and added, “In the spirit of her great esteem, Ewha will make utmost efforts to uphold the highest standard of world-class education across all disciplines including this one.”
