Successful Hosting of the “2021 Ewha-Luce International Seminar” for Fostering Next-Generation Women Leaders in Natural Sciences and Engineering

The 2021 Ewha-Luce International Seminar was jointly hosted by Ewha and the Henry Luce Foundation of the U.S. for 12 days from June 28 (Mon) to July 14 (Wed). This sixth annual seminar was held with the aim to facilitate career development of and interactions between female graduate students in natural sciences and engineering in Korea and those in the U.S., Asia and Australia, and to foster the next generation of women leaders in sciences. The event was carried out in a non-contact online format via Zoom to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The event consisted of lectures, discussions, presentations and workshops that took place through online real-time access between 33 female graduate students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in Korea and overseas countries including the U.S., Australia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Japan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, alongside 25 instructors teaching in Korea, the U.S., India, Australia, etc.

On June 30 (Wed), the “Opening Special Talk with Two Presidents” event was co-hosted by Ewha President Eun Mee Kim and Mariko Silver, President and CEO of the Henry Luce Foundation; on July 1 (Thu), a keynote speech titled “Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Technology and Environment” was delivered by Professor Londa Schiebinger at Stanford University in the U.S.; and on July 12 (Mon) and 13 (Tue), special lectures titled “Science for Sustainable Development” and “Science in the Digital Age” were given by chief researcher Shirin Malekpour at the Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) of Monash University in Australia and President Ahn Hye-yeon at the Korea Foundation for Women In Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), respectively.

Moreover, in the “Science Talk Concert” event held over four days from July 8 (Mon) to 13 (Tue), a total of 33 participants planned, prepared and gave presentations independently under the four themes of “Women’s Leadership in Science,” “Science and Gender,” “Science for Sustainable Development,” and “Science in the Digital Age.” Through the event, they had the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership and the ability to persuasively convey their research subjects in front of an audience and to develop their capacity as scientists who actively communicate with the public.

The successful hosting of the 2021 Ewha-Luce International Seminar is expected to create the necessary momentum to actively promote international seminars, exchanges and cooperative projects that utilize online platforms.
