EGEP, a Program for Women Working in Public Service and NGOs in Asian and African Regions, Focuses on Strengthening Capacity of Women with the Support of UN Women

From January 9th (Wed) until January 22nd (Tue), Ewha is running the 3rd edition of the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGEP), a program designed to cultivate women talents working in public service and NGOs in Asian and African regions.

EGEP, which has been run twice successfully since its launch in January 2012, greatly appealed to activists in Asian-African region. For the 3rd edition of EGEP, 23 competent women from 19 countries were selected from a large pool of applicants, with an admissions ratio of 18:1. The diverse participants include a human rights lawyer working for women in Afghanistan, a human rights activist working to abolish polygamy in India, and an expert working for the United Nations.

EGEP participants receive leadership education focusing on women’s leadership and capacity building, and will have the chance to expand their networks during the two-week program, which includes an international forum, action plan, field experiences, and lectures on themes such as women’s leadership, religion, and women’s movements.

This year’s EGEP is especially meaningful since it now has support and participation from UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women. Ewha and UN Women- a collaboration of UN-affiliated organizations for women- signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate for gender equality and women’s education on December 24th, 2012 (Mon).

Ewha has made various efforts to spread education with women around the world and fulfill its social obligation by fostering globally competent women. Along with EGEP, Ewha has other programs such as EGPP- an educational program for women from developing countries that offers a full scholarship and stipend- and  Ewha-KOICA- a graduate program for women working in public service in developing countries.
