Ewha Founder Mary F. Scranton, Mugunghwa Medal Awarded

Mary F. Scranton, the founder of Ewha Womans University was given the Order of National Service Merit, known as the Mugunghwa Medal, for her dedication for instituting modern education for Korean women. Mugunghwa Medal is the highest honor awarded by the government.

Mary F. Scranton devoted herself to enhance the status of Korean women. She came to Seoul in 1885, when she was 52, and started to teach a student in 1886. She started a Sunday school at Ewha Haktang, the first-ever girl's school in Korea in Jeongdong from 1888. Through the school, she fostered a number of talented women in various fields of medicine, education and missionary work. The girl's school has today developed into Ewha Womans University, the largest women's university in the world.

In October, Ewha hosted a series of events prepared to observe the works of Mary F. Scranton and commemorate the her spirit that include memorial chapels, memorial services, and an academic symposium. Ewha also invited eight descendants of Scranton after having searched over the past 20 years.
