Joan Ruddock, the British Minister of State for Energy Gave a Special Lecture
Joan Ruddock, the minister of state for energy at the British Department of Energy and Climate Change held a special lecture titled, 'A Change for the Better : the Importance of Taking Action on Climate Change' for students at ECC on August 11.
Through this lecture, she summarized the climate change issue into three key words : threat, choice, and action. She insisted that we still have chances for change although human kind is under threat from the climate change and emphasized the necessity of actions of individuals.
Despite the vacation period, 230 students filled the lecture room and expressed great interest on the environment issue. During the Q&A session after the lecture, so many questions were brought up concerning the roles of Korean government on the issue and how to motivate people to participate in actions for climate change.
Choi Yoon Jung(06·International Studies) asked, "What would be the future prospect for women's involvement in environmental decision-making processes?" and showed her wish for women to act as an influential and responsible environmental change agent. Joan Ruddock said, "Even the British parliament, which is also called the mother of parliaments, allocates only 20% of the total seats for women" and insisted that we should strengthen strategy, education, and alliance of young and bright women to increase participation of women on decision making.
Seo Yoo Jin(07·Computer Science & Engineering) said, "I was surprised to find out such passion for environment issues of Ewha students. I could learn the seriousness of the climate change and the importance of actions of individuals through this lecture."
This lecture was held at Ewha in response to minister Joan Ruddock's wish to meet the students of Ewha, for it has fostered many women leaders of Korea.
