Ewha Established 'Institute for the Early Universe(IEU)'

Nobel Laureate, Professor Smoot Accelerate Research on 'the Beginning of the Universe'

Ewha has established 'Institute for the Early Universe(IEU)' and held an opening ceremony on March 27.

The establishment of the IEU is part of the WCU(World Class University) project which is a project run by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology to nurture universities into internationally competitive schools. George F. Smoot, professor of Physics at Berkeley University, is the 2006 Nobel laureate in physics and is invited as the head of the Institute. He is known to be an authority of astrophysics and cosmology and have contributed to the develoopment of modern physics.

The research subject of IEU is 'the Beginning of the Universe'. IEU will run various research activities to explore and understand the early universe. Professor Smoot’s partners at Ewha are professor Changrim Ahn, Jongmann Yang, Il H. Park, and Chanju Kim.

IEU of Ewha will conduct a joint research with Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics at the University of California, Berkeley on early universe. In addition, the research team will closely work with National Aeronautics and Space Administration to build and launch micro satellites.

In the hopes of fostering science talents of the next generation, IEU is planning to institute 'GTA(Global Teacher's Academy)'. GTA will play the role of a professional education institute and support science teachers of junior-high and high schools to enhance quality of science education.

Professor Smoot said, "We are planning to build a world-class research center in Ewha in the areas of fundamental physics, astrophysics and space technology. I would like to build a wide network with the renowned research institutes around the world and with some Korean Universities."

Professor Smoot is teaching ‘Regular Physics’ and ‘Modern Cosmology’ for the undergraduate students at Ewha this semester. He will be teaching one semester each year for five years at Ewha.
