Professor Lee's Team Succeeded in Developing Cure for Osteoporosis
The research team of Soo Young Lee, professor of Division of Molecular and Life Sciences succeeded in finding the cause of osteoporosis and developed new cure that prevents bone loss.
There has been many research on cure for osteoporosis including RANKL(Receptor Activator for Nuclear Factor κ B Ligand). However, they are known to lack effectiveness due to possible side effects in the immune system when medicated for long period. On the other hand, the newly developed cure of Lee's team is found to affect immune cells and revealed excellent prevention and cure effects when tested on mice with bone loss. This breakthrough is published this March on online 'Journal of Clinical Investigation', an internationally renowned scientific journal.
Professor Lee said, "This research has presented a new way of controlling osteoclast in the aspects of selectiveness and effectiveness. We expect this development will become the start of developing various cures for osteoporosis as well as bone loss."
