Computer Science and Engineering Major Holds 40th Anniversary Ceremony
The Computer Science and Engineering major at Ewha, which boasts the longest history among computer science departments in South Korea, held its 40th anniversary commemoration ceremony at the Lee San-bong Hall of the Ewha Campus Complex building on Friday, October 1.
The commemorative event was co-hosted by the Computer Science and Engineering major and the Computer Science and Engineering Major Alumnae Association and sponsored by the Center for Simulated Reality and Contents Convergence, which is the ICT Research Center (ITRC) at Ewha, and held with the aim to celebrate the milestones achieved by the major over the past 40 years and to renew its resolution to become an ever-growing major at Ewha.
Officiated by Head Professor Park Sang-soo, the event commenced with a guest lecture titled “Future of ICT, Computing, and Universities” by the former Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning Choi Yang-hee. The official ceremony opened at 5 p.m. with a prayer led by University Chaplain Ahn Sun-hee, followed by a welcome speech by Dean Chung Myong-soo of the ELTEC College of Engineering, congratulatory remarks by President Eun Mee Kim and President Lee Ju-hee of the Computer Science and Engineering Major Alumnae Association, and words of encouragement by President Nah Yun-mook of the Korea Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers and Professor Emeritus Lee Ki-ho of the Computer Science and Engineering major.
President Eun Mee Kim remarked in her congratulatory address, “In the midst of all-time high demand for experts in the field of artificial intelligence, the growth of Ewha’s Computer Science and Engineering major presents critical implications with regard to Ewha’s efforts toward the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence major, the Division of AI Convergence, and the College of Artificial Intelligence,” and added, “We expect that the Computer Science and Engineering major will play an even greater role in Ewha’s endeavor to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution and we dedicate our most heartfelt wishes for the major to take a further leap forward throughout the next 40 and even 100 years.”
The ceremony was followed by congratulatory remarks from President Lee Ju-hee of the Computer Science and Engineering Major Alumnae Association and words of encouragement from President Nah Yun-mook of the Korea Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers, and Lee Ki-ho, the major’s first professor and current Professor Emeritus. Professor Emeritus Cho Dong-sub, also from the Computer Science and Engineering major, gave an introductory lecture on the “40-year History of Computer Science and Engineering at Ewha,” and Alumnae Association President Lee Ju-hee reported on alumnae-related news and presented appreciation plaques.
The Computer Science and Engineering major was established in 1981 as the Department of Computer Science and has produced 2,500 graduates to date. Since its establishment, it has played a leading role in nurturing key talents equipped with global competitiveness in the IT field over the past 40 years and achieved a series of meaningful outcomes by producing many outstanding graduates who made significant contributions to society. The major explores information and communication technologies, which form the backbone of future industries, as well as the hardware and software necessary for the operation of such technologies. In response to changes in the industrial demand for advanced software engineers, the major is preparing to lead the future through cutting-edge education and research based on Ewha’s state-of-the-art educational environment and excellent faculty members.
