On Monday, May 27 at 4 p.m., the Graduate School of International Studies hosted a special lecture by Distinguished Professor Robert L. Gallucci on “Deterrence Theory and Practice on the Korean Peninsula” as part of the “William J. Perry Lecture” series at the ECC Lee Sam-bong Hall.

美 전 북핵 특사 로버트 갈루치 교수 초청 특강 개최The event was moderated by Visiting Professor Sohn Jie Ae of the Department of International Studies and began with welcoming remarks from President Eun Mee Kim and a speaker introduction by Dean Ihn-Hwi Park of Scranton College. Under the theme of “Deterrence Theory and Practice on the Korean Peninsula,” Professor Gallucci's lecture addressed a broad spectrum of relevant theories and practical policies in the context of the Korean Peninsula, sharing serious considerations for ensuring peace in the said region and specifically discussing strategies for nuclear deterrence and fundamental solutions for overcoming North Korea's nuclear threats. As a former U.S. Department of State Special Envoy on the North Korean nuclear issue and Distinguished Professor at Georgetown University, Robert L. Gallucci has contributed to global peace and security as a prominent U.S. diplomat and negotiator for over 20 years. The lecture was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Professor Sohn Jie Ae, presenting an opportunity for students and the public to share in Professor Gallucci’s knowledge and insights.

Perry Lecture” series, a program established through collaboration between Ewha Womans University and the U.S.-based nonprofit Pacific Century Institute (PCI). Established in 2016, this program has provided insights for promoting peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula through lectures by invited experts, including the eponymous former U.S. Defense Secretary Perry. Through this lecture series, Ewha has also hosted former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano in 2021, former U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens in 2022, and Dr. Siegfried Hecker last year.
