‘Race and Gender’ Lecture Series aims to have an open discussion about race and gender with renowned scholars in related fields.

Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World In this talk, Dr. Kim will discuss her new book, Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World, which is a sweeping historical examination of how Asian Americans have been positioned relative to white people and Black people in the U.S. racial order from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Under pressure from the Black freedom struggle, the U.S. racial-capitalist state has developed a historical pattern of weaponizing Asian Americans against this struggle, invoking them as an alibi for U.S. society, and choosing to redress anti-Asian racism as a substitute for redressing anti-Black racism. Asian Americans have often gone along with this dynamic, weaponizing themselves against Black liberation, with profound implications for how racial dynamics have played out and will continue to play out in the twenty-first century. Speaker: Claire Jean Kim (University of California, Irvine) Claire Jean Kim is Professor of Political Science and Asian American Studies at University of California, Irvine, where she teaches classes on comparative race studies and human-animal studies. She is the author of Bitter Fruit: The Politics of Black-Korean Conflict in New York City (Yale UP, 2000), Dangerous Crossings: Race, Species, and Nature in a Multicultural Age (Cambridge UP, 2017), and in September 2023, she published Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World (Cambridge UP, 2023).
