Over 10,000 Deliveries in 30 Years, Professor Kim Recognized for Contributions to High-Risk Pregnancy and Preterm Birth Response
On the 11th, Professor Kim Young-ju of the College of Medicine was honored with the Prime Minister's Commendation at the 13th Population Day ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare at the Westin Chosun Seoul, for her efforts in addressing the low birthrate.
As an obstetrician-gynecologist at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, Professor Kim has delivered over 10,000 babies and managed the health of newborns over the past 30 years, since 1993. As a director of the Prevention and Treatment of Preterm Birth Center, Professor Kim improved the delivery and treatment of premature babies and dedicated herself to the research of high-risk pregnancy prevention and treatment. In particular, her recent work in developing early prediction methods for preterm birth and providing evidence for the use of personalized labor suppressants has contributed to addressing high-risk pregnancies and childbirth, receiving the Prime Minister’s Commendation.
Professor Kim said, "Given the current low birthrate crisis in Korea, if we cannot increase the birthrate, then we must prevent the loss of newborn babies due to preterm births and provide excellent care for high-risk pregnant women in order to overcome this crisis. I will continue to work hard for the health of mothers, newborns, and preterm babies."
In addition, Professor Kim established the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Prevention Research Center at Ewha Mokdong Hospital to educate pregnant women on the harms of alcohol and smoking, contributing to the birth of healthy newborns. She also serves as the director of Disabled-Friendly Obstetrics and Gynecology, providing optimal medical services for the safe delivery and treatment of women with disabilities. She has held positions as the President of the Korea Breastfeeding Network and the Korean Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine.
