Korea Culture Research Institute hosted the annual meeting titled “Scenes from Crafts Culture in the Joseon Dynasty”

The annual meeting of the Korea Culture Research Institute at Ewha Womans University, titled “Scenes from Crafts Culture in the Joseon Dynasty,” was hosted at the Auditorium 1 of the National Museum of Korea on November 24th (Fri).

Material Culture Team of the Korea Culture Research Institute (KCRI) at Ewha Womans University (Director: Professor Youngchan Oh at the Social Studies Education Department) hosted the annual conference titled “Scenes from Crafts Culture in the Joseon Dynasty” at the Auditorium 1 of the National Museum of Korea on November 24th.


The meeting was held as a part of a 2019 Institute Program in the Humanities & Social Sciences supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRFK), Construction and Annotation of DB about Joseon Crafts. The Material Culture Team of the KCRI at Ewha Womans University (Chief Researcher: Namwon Jang, a professor at the Art History Department and the Director of Ewha Womans University Museum) is working on the NRFK-supported program.


The Material Culture Team of the KCRI has collected documents and artifacts to create a database about crafts in the Joseon Dynasty for the past five years since 2019. This year’s meeting aimed to share the Material Culture Team’s academic accomplishments that highlight the crafts culture in the Joseon Dynasty based on the team’s collection. The presentations consisted of three sessions (Folk Crafts, Royal Crafts, and Craft Materials and Skills) and discussed nine topics (e.g. history of ceramics, clothes, and metalcraft).


The first session, Folk Crafts, was about how crafted goods were used by common people in the Joseon society. Presentations in this session were about How the 16th century Joseon aristocrat Acquired and Used Ceramic Containers in Journals (Presenter: Hyojeong Yoon at the KCRI), Chan-an-sang and Hyang-jwa-a in the “Painting on the Banquet Celebrating the 60th Wedding Anniversary” at the National Museum of Korea (Presenter: Mira Kim at the KCRI), and Reconstruction of Kitchen Items in the Gyeonpyeongbang in the capital of the late Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Hyeseon Han at the KCRI).


The second session, Royal Craftwork, was about what and how crafted goods were used in the royal court of the Joseon dynasty. Presentations in this session were about Storage Space of Ming Porcelain (Presenter: Namwon Jang at Ewha Womans University), Types of Porcelain discovered from the Royal Tomb of the Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Jiyoung Jang at the Museum Myungwon of Kookmin University), and Jak: a Chalice for National Rites in the Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Hye-in Ku at the KCRI).


The third session, Craft Materials and Skills, was about materials and skills used for craftwork in the Joseon Dynasty. Presentations in this session were about Perception and Use Cases of Wicker Mats in the Late Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Daran Lee at Ewha Womans University), Materials and Production Skills for Belts for Government Officials in the Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Eunju Lee at Andong National University), and Introduction and Development of Metal Enamelling Skill in the Late Joseon Dynasty (Presenter: Serin Kim at the KCRI).

한국문화연구원, '조선시대 공예문화의 장면들' 정기학술대회 개최The KCRI at Ewha Womans University said that it wished this meeting to be an opportunity to spark interest in craftworks of the Joseon Dynasty and broaden the understanding of crafts in the Joseon Dynasty. The team also said the KCRI will carry out more academic projects for developing the system of the database about crafts in the Joseon Dynasty.
