Professors Sun Choi, Jae-Sang Ryu, and Jinha Yu at the Pharmacy Department received the Achievement Award from the Asian Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (AFMC) for their contribution to the success of the 14th AFMC International Medicinal Chemistry Symposium (AIMECS 2023).
The AFMC, one of the top three global medicinal chemistry federations, hosts the International Medicinal Chemistry Symposium (AIMECS) every two years. The AIMECS 2023 took place in the capital of South Korea, at Conrad Seoul, from June 25th to 28th (Sun-Wed). Under the theme of New Era of Medicinal Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities, oral and poster presentations of around 300 abstracts from two keynote lectures and nineteen topic-based sessions were delivered. The participants included delegates from the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) and the American Chemical Society (ACS), as well as global pharmaceutical companies like Roche and Merck. Academics, researchers, and industry experts from South Korea and other countries shared wide-ranging information, from the basis of drug discovery to clinical trial results, thereby making the event a venue for global academic exchanges.
As a president of the Medicinal Chemistry branch at the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea (PSK), Professor Sun Choi hosted AIMECS 2023 in South Korea, served as a chair of the Scientific Program Committee, overseeing the entire academic program, and made a contribution to expanding the PSK’s international cooperation by adding special sessions for researchers from Southeast countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. As a delegate of the AFMC, she also signed an MOU between the EFMC and AFMC at the EFMC International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry in Nice, France, last September. She was also a session moderator at the AFMC, leading academic exchanges between medicinal chemists from European and Asian countries.
Professor Jae-Sang Ryu made a big contribution to the success of AIMECS 2023 by serving as the chair of the Finance Committee, overseeing the financial matters of the symposium from around thirty booth exhibitions to the management of more than forty sponsors. Professor Jinha Yu made a big contribution as well, taking on financial matters as a member of the Finance Committee.
The Global AI Drug Discovery Center at Ewha Womans University (Director: Sun Choi) took part in the AIMECS 2023 as a co-host organization, leading the Intelligence (AI) in Drug Discovery session. Professor Soosung Kang at the Pharmacy Department, an assistant director at the center, led the discussion as a moderator. Professor Juyoung Yoon at the Chemistry & Nanoscience Department, a research member of the center and a president of the Organic Chemistry Division at the Korean Chemical Society, delivered a lecture as a guest speaker.
