Union of REsearching Climatology and Atmospheric science(U-RECA), club of the Climate & Energy Systems Engineering major, has been awarded the top prize(Environment Ministry Prize) in the life-security area of the ‘2023 Contest of Weather Big-data.’ This contest, hosted by the Meteorological Administration, was to reconsider national security due to climate change and put out ‘life-security’ and ‘marine-security’ as categories. The development of ground-temperature calculation skill using weather conditions was the detailed topic of the life-security category. A total of 49 pieces entered the contest, and the winner was selected through preliminary and final rounds. U-RECA invented the ‘Seasonal ground-temperature forecast model utilizing the Weighted Extratree Ensemble,’ which minimized the observation gap and enhanced the forecast accuracy of the ground-surface temperature. It also showcased an utilization measure for heat waves and ice formation, and so was honored with the top prize award.

U-RECA is an academic club under the ELTEC College of Engineering’s Climate & Energy Systems Engineering major. Created in 2018 with the purpose to study climatology and atmospheric science, it is active in the weather, climate change, environment areas. It has achieved many good results such as the top prize(Environment Ministry Prize) of the 2019 green campus environment club, the top prize(Meteorological Administration Prize) of the 2021 climate change analysis contest, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Prize of the 2022 marine science big-data exposition.

The 6th U-RECA presidents, Hwang Sun Min and Sun Ah Jo, along with Da Bin Yeom, Ji Eun Ahn, Yu Na Cha, Jin Lee, Ji Eun Kim, Woo Rim Namgung, Da Hyeon Oh, Da Young Lee, and Jun Ha Lee said, “It’s an honor to be able to contribute to national security through the ground-temperature forecast model we made.” They also thanked Ewha’s professors of the Climate & Energy Systems Engineering major who helped the club.
