Professor Choi Sun of the Department of Pharmacy Was Re-elected as Chairman of the Life and Medical Affairs Committee of

Professor Choi Sun of the Department of Pharmacy was appointed chairman of the Life and Medical Affairs Committee of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology and was awarded a letter of appointment at a joint workshop of technical experts held in El Tower, Seoul, on January 26. Professor Choi was appointed as the chairman of the Life and Medical Affairs Committee in 2021, and was re-elected this time to take on a heavy responsibility once again. The term of office is two years from January 2023 to the end of December 2024.

The Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology is chaired by the president as the highest deliberation body for science and technology policies based on the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology Act. It consists of an advisory council serving as a presidential adviser and a council that reviews policies and budgets, and has specialized committees in technology fields such as public & space, energy & environment, ICT & convergence, machinery & materials, life & medical, basic infrastructure, and national defense.

As chairman of the Life and Medical Affairs Committee, Professor Choi will review the agenda related to science, technology, and R&D to be presented at the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technologys deliberation meeting and prepare investment strategies for each government R&D investment direction and technology sector. The government's R&D budget for this year is 3.948 trillion won in the areas under the jurisdiction of the Life and Medical Specialist Committee, which consists of life, health, medical, agriculture, fisheries, and food sectors, and experts from each field participate as expert members.

The life, health, and medical sectors cover 134 projects with 1.7621 trillion won from 12 ministries that promote R&D such as new drugs, medical devices, clinical health, industrial innovation, and regulatory science, while the agriculture, fisheries, and food sectors cover 103 projects with 1.3327 trillion won from 9 ministries that promote R&D such as safety, variety and food, advanced convergence, life resources, and innovative ecosystems.

Choi not only served as a member of the bio-special committee under the Presidential Advisory Council on Science & Technology but also contributed to the compilation of the "Biotechnology White Paper," which systematically compiles the government's major policies and R&D status, domestic and international research trends and prospects in the field of biotechnology.

Professor Choi is an expert in molecular modeling and computer-based drug design, and as the head of the Global AI New Drug Development Research Center and Ewha Fellow, she has conducted international and industrial cooperation research with Microsoft and other world-class researchers, achieving excellent results through active multidisciplinary convergence research. Professor Choi is △ Chairman of the Korean Biophysical Association △ Vice Chairman of the Korean Biophysical Association △ International Cooperation Committee of the Korean Pharmaceutical Association △ Representative/organizing member of the IUPAB World Congress △ Chairman of the Asian Pharmaceutical and Chemical Federation (AFMC-AIMECS) World Congress, and was △ Chairman of the Korean Protein Society △ Chairman of the Korean Pharmaceutical Association △ Organizing Committee of the Korean Federation of Biomolecular Sciences △ Vice Chairman of the Korean Society of Molecular and Cell Biology △ Expert Member of the Korean Research Foundation △ Private Member of the National Ultra Performance Computing Committee.
