Ewha Institute for Politics (Director: Professor Eunbong Choi) held an October colloquium on October 30, under the theme of “awareness of inequality and politics.” The Institute has been hosting colloquiums to mark the 70th anniversary of the Department of Political Science & International Relations. On September 25, along with the anniversary celebration ceremony, the September colloquium was held under the theme of “Agora politics and Korean Democracy.”

Professor Min Hee Go of the Department of Political Science & International Relations, who hosted the event, said "Ewha Institute for Politics, which was established to mark the 70th anniversary of the Department of Political Science, has hosted the events in the middle of the pandemic thanks to your support." "We will continue to make meaningful achievement for politics science community by hosting more events in the future," said Professor Eunbong Choi, director of Ewha Institute for Politic.

Professor Yeon Ju Lee of the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study made a presentation about "awareness of inequality and politics." Professor Lee focused on the relationship between a sense of inequality as well as the relationship between inequality assessment and the preference for redistribution. In the presentation, she explained how people perceive and feel unfairness based on their countries’ historical backgrounds. Professor Lee stressed that it is important to know how people perceive and interpret income inequality to understand the impacts of income inequality on political attitudes and political behavior. She also pointed out that inequality assumption has a more important effect than inequality judgment on people's political attitudes and behaviors. In addition, she said that various factors, such as the media and the surrounding environment, affect people’s perception of income inequality and that the income gap becomes severe when the public feels anger about injustice. Lastly, she said that historical backgrounds, such as the social hierarchy of the wealthy and elite and the concept of equality and inequality, also have an important impact on the perception of inequality.

Following the presentation, Professor Inhan Kim, Professor Byoung Won Min, Professor Jongkon Lee, Professor Ji-Whan Yun, and Professor Eunbong Choi had a heated discussion moderated by Professor Min Hee Go.

Ewha Institute for Politics is the first affiliated institute of the Department of Political Science to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the department. The institute has conducted various programs suggesting important topics regarding the political agenda of the Northeast Asian situation and the global community. The November colloquium will be held on November 27, under the theme of “Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation: Analyzing what causes cooperation and separation.”

The institute has been establishing itself as the center of the alumni network by hosting more events including a meeting for international students in the grad school, which held in October 29.
