The Office of University-Industry Cooperation at Ewha Womans University (Director: Cho Willyeom) held a major technology transfer agreement signing ceremony with The Scripps Korea Antibody Institute (Director: Jung Hoyeon) on Friday, October 17. It regarded the transfer of materials and licensing of patent technology for the “antibody library.”

Ewha Womans University previously signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province in 2024 to promote the “National Advanced Strategic Industry in Biotechnology.” ThroughTech-Biz Ewha 2024, the university has also built close collaboration with The Scripps Korea Antibody Institute, located in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province.
Since introducing the first-generation antibody library (OPAL) from Ewha Womans University in 2018—developed under the leadership of Professor Shim Hyunbo of the Department of Life Science—The Scripps Korea Antibody Institute has been at the forefront of developing effective target antibodies. The institute has also contributed to the meaningful application of Ewha’s core technologies in the industry through third-party licensing with numerous companies. In addition, by participating in Ewha’s internal technology commercialization support program “Ewha Value-up,” which is linked to the Ministry of Education and National Research Foundation of Korea’sBRIDGE 3.0program for the practical use of university creative assets, the institute continues to expand its close collaboration with Ewha Womans University for the development of global antibody therapeutics.
The key technology covered by this agreement, the “human antibody library,” is a core foundational technology for the development of antibody-based therapeutics. Since 2009, Ewha Womans University has transferred this technology to more than 30 domestic companies, producing exemplary cases that demonstrate the significant impact of university-owned bio-innovations through successful clinical trial entries and global third-party licensing agreements.
Director Cho Willyeom of the Office of University-Industry Cooperation stated, “Through this major technology transfer agreement, I hope that the antibody library developed at Ewha Womans University will serve as a valuable resource in advancing the antibody drug development goals of The Scripps Korea Antibody Institute.” He added, “We also look forward to expanding collaboration with various Ewha researchers across the fields of biotechnology, medicine, and chemistry.”
Professor Shim Hyunbo of the Department of Life Science commented, “I have devoted nearly 20 years to research in the field of antibody engineering, and I believe that the true value of a university’s original technology is realized when it is put to use in the industry. Through this agreement, we will actively collaborate with The Scripps Korea Antibody Institute to advance the development of global antibody therapeutics.”
