Baek Yoo-jung, Choi Jung-yoon, Hwang Nuri, who entered Ewha in 2017 and now majoring in Business Administration and Scranton, won Grand Prize at the 7th Fact-Checking Contest.

Hosted by the Korea Broadcasting Journalist Association, the contest marked its 7th edition since its launch in 2018. It aims to raise awareness of misinformation and enhance citizens’ media literacy. This year’s contest featured two categories: 1) “Fact-Check”, which involved directly verifying official statements by public figures or information shared on social media and presenting the verifications in video or text form, 2) “Content”, which included campaign videos, webtoons, podcasts, card news, essays, scripts, testimonies, slogans, and other content related to the contest’s theme.

The team from Ewha won the Grand Prize (MBC President’s Award) in the Fact-Check category for their article on “440,000 youth who are just taking a break,” which had been widely covered by the media in July. The team pointed out that as the article didn’t specify a clear definition nor adequate understanding of the term “just taking a break”, it could reinforce negative perceptions against the youth and distort employment environment. Through their fact-checking, they sought to correct these misconceptions. Their efforts were highly recognized for demonstrating “a textbook example of fact-checking, from selecting a topic and gathering materials to conducting investigations and validifying the claims.”

Hwang Nuri stated that, “Thanks to the critical thinking skills I honed over 3-4 years in Scranton College at Ewha, I was able to identify distortions in media reports. I then utilized diverse academic and technical skills to fact-check the various propositions presented by the media. Throughout this process, I received tremendous support and encouragement from many professors, which made me proud to be a member of Ewha community.”
