Professor Lee Yoon-Jin from the Department of Mathematics has been elected as the 20th president of the Korean Women in Mathematical Sciences (KWMS) and will serve in 2025.
The KWMS was established to promote academic development and active exchange among Korean mathematicians, thereby expanding the boundaries of women in mathematical sciences. It aims to contribute to advancements in mathematics and science and make a positive impact on society. Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, KWMS has grown into a major academic society with approximately 700 members. Its key initiatives include hosting international academic conferences, organizing the Next-Generation Women in Mathematical Sciences Leaders Forum, running a Summer School, and operating a student journalist group. Through these activities, KWMS identifies outstanding female talent and strengthens research networks among women in the field. The society actively collaborates with organizations such as the Korean Federation of Women's Science and Technology Associations (KOFWST) and the Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS). It also envisions expanding its international network through its association with the Asian and Oceanian Women in Mathematics, which was established to facilitate academic exchange among women mathematicians in Asia.
Professor Lee previously served as the Dean of Admissions at Ewha Womans University for four years (2017–2021) and was a member of the Ministry of Education's University Admissions Policy Advisory Committee (2022–2023). For seven years (2013–2019), she led the BK21 Plus project team at Ewha, titled "Fostering Global Women Talents in Mathematical Sciences," and currently serves as the Director of the Ewha Institute of Mathematical Sciences, where she oversees key research projects and manages the institute. Professor Lee is internationally recognized for her active research in number theory and its applied field, coding theory. She has been serving as an editor for the prestigious SCI-indexed journal Discrete Mathematics since 2022. She also contributed to the development of mathematics domestically and internationally by serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of the Korean Mathematical Society (2017–2018).
Professor Lee remarked, "By strengthening research networks, we aim to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean women mathematicians and actively contribute to the advancement of mathematics, which will play a pivotal role in the future of cutting-edge industries. I look forward to seeing KWMS evolve further as a leading academic society in these efforts."
