The research project of Professor Hong Hae-jin (Ewha Brain Institute) was selected for the 2024 Post-Doctoral Research Program, part of the next-generation science program hosted by the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry of Education launched the “Post-Doc. Research Program” this year to foster mentorship between post-doctoral researchers and distinguished university faculty, promoting innovative and challenging joint research. Around 180 projects were selected nationwide. At Ewha, Professor Hong’s research project titled ‘Elucidation of Brain Mechanisms Contributing to Resilience to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)’ was selected, and her team will receive a total of 600 million won in research funding over the next three years, from September 2024 to August 2027. The team plans to investigate the role of memory suppression mechanisms in the brain and their impact on PTSD symptom recovery, aiming to validate these mechanisms through clinical applications.

Professor Hong has previously engaged in research on brain mechanisms underlying stress-related disorders, including PTSD, through brain imaging analysis. She also published in several SCI-level international journals as a first-author such as “Psychiatry Research”, “European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience”, and “Experimental Neurobiology”.

The research team includes Professor Ryu In-kyu of the Department of Pharmacy and Brain and Cognitive Sciences as a mentor, and research Professor Seo Chae-won as a co-investigator. Professor Ryu is a leader of Ewha Brain Institute and has been successfully leading various projects such as brain science source technology development of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Korean National Fire Agency, and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). As a leader scholar in the field of PTSD, Professor Ryu will guide the post-doctoral research and support the project’s success.

Through this project, the research team aims to explore how the persistence of intrusive traumatic memories affects resilience. Through this research, the team hopes to provide insights that may lead to new treatment and prevention measures for PTSD.
