Professor Emeritus Cho Chung-hyun from the Department of Ceramic Arts and Professor Emeritus Kim Hyung-dae from the Department of Western Painting have been selected as members of the Fine Arts Division of the National Academy of Arts.


The National Academy of Arts selected nine new members, including Professors Cho and Kim from Ewha Womans University, during its 73rd general meeting held on June 27. This brings the total number of members of the Academy to 80, which operates on a lifetime membership system and has a maximum capacity of 100 members. According to the "National Academy of Arts Act," the Academy selects members in various fields such as literature, fine arts, music, theater, film, and dance. Eligible candidates must have at least 30 years of experience in the art field and have made significant contributions to the development of the arts in Korea.


Professor Emeritus Cho Chung-hyun is a distinguished figure in modern Korean ceramics. She served as a professor in the Department of Ceramic Arts at Ewha from 1971 to 2005, and was the Dean of the College of Fine Arts from 1999 to 2003. She has received numerous accolades, including the Minister of Culture Award, the Prime Minister’s Award at the National Art Exhibition, and the President Award of Korea(Green Stripes).


Professor Emeritus Kim Hyung-dae is a renowned abstract artist who gained recognition through the National Art Exhibition of Korea for the first time in Korean Art history. He served as a professor of Western Painting at Ewha from 1977 to 2002 and was awarded the Order of Service Merit (Yellow Stripes) in 2022.


The National Academy of Arts is a special institution under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, established to honor and support artists with significant achievements in artistic creation. The Academy's activities include policy advising on arts promotion, supporting artistic creation, organizing domestic and international art exchanges and events, and presenting the National Academy of Arts Award.
