Professor Moon Kyung-won, from the Department of Western Painting, was awarded the Kim Se-choong Sculpture Award, presented by the Kim Se-choong Memorial Association.

The Kim Se-choong Award was established in 1987 to honor the achievements of sculptor Kim Se-choong (1928-1986), a pioneer of modern Korean sculpture. Each year, the award recognizes an artist who has demonstrated exceptional talent in the field of sculpture. To date, 82 recipients have received the Sculpture Award, and 26 have received the Korean Art Writing and Publishing Award. Professor Moon, along with artist Jeon Jun-ho, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Kim Se-choong Sculpture Award.

The committee noted that while the award is named for ‘sculpture,’ it has evolved to inclusively recognize a variety of ‘sculptural forms’ that expand the boundaries of contemporary art. They emphasized the importance of originality, sustainability, and contemporaneity in their selection, particularly amidst the emergence of digital age, changes in the identity of sculpture, expanded expressive forms, and genre hybridity. The award ceremony will take place on Monday, June 24, at the Kim Se-choong Museum in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

Since 2009, Professor Moon and artist Jeon Jun-ho have been collaboratively exploring fundamental questions about the role of art and the power dynamics surrounding it in the face of capitalism's contradictions, historical tragedies, climate change, and the rapid shifts in society. Professor Moon has showcased her work through various mediums such as painting, video, and installation in global exhibitions, including Documenta 13 in Kassel, the 2012 Gwangju Biennale, and the 2015 Venice Biennale. Her accolades include the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's "Artist of the Year 2012" award and the "Noon Award," the top prize at the 9th Gwangju Biennale.
