Customized Free Education Program for Seniors and Elementary, Middle, and High School Students in Seodaemun-gu from April to September

Celebrating its 55th anniversary, the Natural History Museum (Director Park Joong-ki) is offering a free 'Discovery Marine Biodiversity' education program from April to September for Seodaemun-gu residents and university students.

This program is tailored to local senior residents, elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as university students. It is part of the '2024 University Museum Promotion Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korean Association of University Museums (KAUM), associated with the special exhibition “Marine Biodiversity” hosted by the National History Museum since last December.

The program 'Stories from the Sea' is for local seniors and elementary students, and includes hands-on experiences such as touching and observing various marine specimens like sea turtles, sea sponges, and sea squirts alongside the exhibition docent. To bridge cultural gaps, the museum signed an MOU with the Seoul Seobu District Office of Education. Since April, they have been operating programs for adult literacy education institutions, social service institutions, and elementary schools in Seodaemun-gu.

In May, during the 2024 Museum and Art Gallery Week, Ewha’s elementary education department is now engaging in the program called ‘Development of Natural History Museum Exhibition-linked Education'. This time, Ewha students developed educational activities for elementary students to participate in after viewing various exhibitions at the Natural History Museum. This provided meaningful opportunities for pre-elementary school teachers to understand what museums can offer as an educational and cultural space outside of school. In July, there will be a 'Discovery Marine Life' program for middle and high school students linked to elective courses and club activities. Participants will explore symbiotic relationships among marine organisms and challenge themselves to develop creative emoticons expressing the importance of social cooperation. More details are available on the Natural History Museum's website.

Meanwhile, the special exhibition “Marine Biodiversity” at the Natural History Museum covers the diversity and ecosystems of marine organisms, displaying specimens and videos of protected marine species. The exhibition also features a list and photos of marine invertebrates in Korea, as well as videos of deep-sea ecosystems, open freely for everyone. The open hours are Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, closed on Sundays and holidays, with Saturdays in July and August also closed.
