[Today's Ewha] August 20, 1971 / Excavation of the Silla Mural Tomb, Eo-suk Tomb of Sunheung, Gyeongbuk, by the Ewha Womans University Museum
On August 20, 1971, the Ewha Womans University Museum conducted the first excavation in South Korea of a Silla mural tomb—the Eo-suk Tomb located in Sunheung, Gyeongbuk. Since its opening in 1935, the museum has been dedicated not only to exhibitions but also to academic research and investigation. Beginning with the excavation of the ancient tombs in Jotap-dong, Andong, Gyeongbuk in 1963, the museum initiated its excavation projects.
The first all-women excavation team in Korea, composed of students from the Departments of History and Home Economics at Ewha, drew significant public attention and was widely recognized for uncovering the mural paintings in a Silla tomb in South Korea—a national first. Through continued excavations at ancient tombs and kiln sites in Hwangoh-ri (Gyeongju), Sangjapo-ri (Yangpyeong), Bunwon-ri (Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do), and Hwagok-ri (Anseong), the museum has achieved notable academic contributions.
