The Haedong Science Foundation (Chairman Kim Young-jae)

The Haedong Science Foundation (Chairman Kim Young-jae) donated KRW 500 million to launch the “Haedong AI Square (tentative name)” for the University Library at Ewha, with the aim to foster talented female AI specialists who will lead the future society.

The foundation was established in 1991 by the late Kim Chung-shik, former president of Daedeok Electronics, to support science and engineering research and promote industrial technologies. To date, it has made various endeavors to promote the science and technology sector in Korea, through robust award programs, scholarships, and research funding projects for science and engineering researchers and undergraduates, as well as the launch of the Haedong Library in the College of Engineering at universities. In 2019, it launched the “Haedong Creative Learning Space” for the ELTEC College of Engineering at Ewha, through which it has awarded scholarships for Ewha students, amounting to KRW 150 million in total.

Ewha held a donation agreement ceremony on December 20, 2023 (Wed.), expressing gratitude to the Haedong Science Foundation. The ceremony was attended by a delegation from the foundation, including Chairman Kim Young-jae, Deputy Chairman Park Seong-han, and Daeduck Electronics’ Chief of Business Planning Group Kim Jeong-mi (Media Studies, graduating class of 2011). Representing Ewha, President Eun Mee Kim, Executive Vice President for External Affairs Kyung-Shik Shin, Vice President for University Relations and Development Min-Jung Park, Director of University Library Eunkyung Chung, Associate Vice President for University Relations and Development Hyemi Lee were present to express their appreciation.

Chairman Kim expressed, “I am pleased to establish a hub for the emerging megatrend of artificial intelligence in collaboration with Ewha Womans University, which plays a leading role in nurturing future engineering talents, particularly female engineers.” He added, “I hope the future ‘Haedong AI Square (tentatively named)’ aptly embodies the late Chairman Kim Jeong-sik’s steadfast commitment to engineering education, as envisioned when he established this foundation about 30 years ago.”

President Eun Mee Kim commented, “Haedong Science Foundation has long been the foremost supporter of engineering education in Korea, and we deeply appreciate the foundation’s assistance in establishing a hub for innovative education and research.” She also expressed her resolve, stating, “Ewha has solidified its research capabilities in artificial intelligence by establishing the Division of AI Convergence in 2022 and the College of Artificial Intelligence in 2023. With the foundation’s generous support, Ewha will dedicate itself to cultivating female experts with top-level abilities in science and technology.”
