Ewha Womans University (President Hyang Sook Lee) is honored to announce a generous gift of $500,000 (approximately KRW 740 million) from alumna Sung Sook Chang Choi(Pharmacy, Class of ’61) in support of the Ewha West Campus project. In addition to this gift, Ms. Chang has donated an additional USD 500,000 for scholarships and another USD 500,000 for research through the Ewha Foundation, bringing her total contribution to USD 1.5 million.
A 1961 graduate of Ewha’s College of Pharmacy, Ms. Chang has been an active leader in the Chicago Korean community—founding the local Korean YWCA and establishing the first Korean-language school in the area—while maintaining close ties with her alma mater and fellow alumnae. Upon learning that the new Ewha West Campus will house the College of Pharmacy, she decided to make this significant contribution. The West Campus initiative encompasses the reconstruction of the Student Union Hall and the Alumnae Hall, transforming the university’s west-gate area into a cutting-edge hub for global convergence research, industry–academia collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
On Tuesday, April 22, Ewha Womans University held a formal donation ceremony in the president’s reception room. Representing Ms. Chang—who currently resides in the U.S.—were her daughter, Yonhee Choi Gordon, and her grandson, Kevin Gordon, along with Hung Le, Senior Vice Chancellor of Pepperdine University. Ewha’s delegation included Vice President for Research and External Affairs Jhungsoo Park, Director of the Office of International Affairs Youngjin Cho, Director of External Affairs Yoonjung Choi, and Deputy Director Hyemi Lee.
At the ceremony, Ms. Yonhee Choi Gordon remarked, “My mother was so passionate during her time in the College of Pharmacy that she served as a class representative, and even today she carries the spirit of Ewha in her heart.” She added, “She takes great pride in Ewha alongside many fellow alumnae active in the U.S., and was overjoyed to make this gift.”
Vice President Jhungsoo Park commented, “We deeply appreciate Ms. Chang’s support—both as a proud alumna of the College of Pharmacy and as a benefactor of Ewha’s future. We will devote ourselves to creating a world-class campus infrastructure that will nurture the aspirations of future pharmacy students.”
