The Ewha International Summer College (EISC), the first summer college in Korea, has fully overcome the COVID-19 crisis and returned to its former reputation. Since its establishment in 1971, the EISC has offered international students from around the world opportunities to participate in cultural activities and receive a wide range of credit-bearing courses in specialized disciplines such as music and arts as well as in diverse majors such as the humanities, economics, business administration and engineering in the Ewha campus.

The four-week Session 1, which commenced on June 26, 2023 (Mon.), was participated in by international students from diverse regions including the Americas and Europe. In particular, students from Rutgers (State University of New Jersey) and the University of Toronto took part in the EISC as part of a faculty-led program. Under the program, the students attended high-quality classes taught in English by faculty from Ewha and prestigious universities around the world, along with Korean language classes appropriate for their level. In addition to the regular classes, Session 1 allowed the students the chance to experience Korean culture through a variety of cultural programs such as a tour of the royal palaces, Korean cooking sessions, a city tour of Seoul and a picnic by the Han River.

Notably, Session 2 was attended by not only students from Asia including Japan Women’s University in Tokyo, but also those in European countries such as Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Greece. Through the session, students enhanced their understanding of Korean culture, while taking Korean language classes catering to their level as well as classes in Korean Studies and various other topics. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to experience Korean culture in person through diverse hands-on experiences including taekwondo training sessions, stamp making workshops and a tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

This year’s EISC programs were attended by students of diverse languages and cultures, which allowed them to broaden their horizons to better understand different cultures and establish a foothold to expand their global network through various exchanges. In particular, the Office of International Affairs was positively received by the students for planning this year’s programs in a way that was designed to help them participate in a wide range of hands-on activities.
