Research Team Led by Professor Nam Wonwoo Publishes Paper in International Journal Nature Chemistry

An international joint research team led by Ewha has discovered the precise role of calcium in the process of photosynthesis by plants, and thereby laid a foundation for the development of artificial oxygen generation.
The result of this study, led by professor Nam Wonwoo of Chemistry & Nano Science at Ewha, was published on September 14 as an article in the online edition of Nature Chemistry, a world-renowned science journal. The team found out that calcium plays a key role in the generation and emission of oxygen in the process of photosynthesis by plants.
This study demonstrated the principle of oxygen generation, and Prof. Nam expects the research to contribute to not only artificial photosynthesis system, but also the development of eco-friendly, alternative energy technology, which would harness the energy generated during oxygen generation.
Prof. Nam thanked the researchers and Ewha students who worked on the study and said, “I am delighted to have the article published in the world-renowned journal, and vow to continue in our tireless efforts towards the Novel Prize.”
