ABRUEM, which is composed of from forty different public universities in Brazil, visited Ewha on June 17th (Mon) to expand collaboration with the university.

ABRUEM is an organization founded by presidents from forty state and city universities in twenty two states of Brazil. Its goal is to reinforce partnerships and exchanges in the fields of education, academic research, and administration. ABRUEM sends a delegation every year to promote interaction with universities abroad. South Korea was chosen this year.

During the two-week visit from June 17th to 29th, ABRUEM held meetings with the Korean Council for University Education and visited Korean universities, beginning with Ewha and following with Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, and KAIST, among others. These universities are participating in Science without Borders, a scholarship program of the Brazilian government.

The Science without Borders program was founded in June 2011 by the Brazilian government with the goal of educating students with skills needed for Brazil’s future development. The program seeks to send 100,000 students majoring in science, math, physics, and engineering to study in the world’s top 150 universities by 2014. Currently, six Brazilian students are studying at Ewha with help from this program.

“Ewha is the only women’s university among the eleven universities participating in Science Without Borders program. This clearly shows the strength of Science Ewha,” remarked President Sun-Uk Kim at the welcoming ceremony held at ECC Lee San-Bong Hall. She added that she hoped to expose ABRUEM to Ewha’s outstanding science education through the university’s introductory presentation and lab tours, and expected the visit to be a good opportunity to commence a deeper relationship between the universities.

ABRUEM learned the history of Ewha’s science education and its successes in various research areas through Environmental Engineering Professor Sun Ki Park’s presentation. After that, delegates had a tour of Ewha’s remarkable laboratory facilities within the Science Building and Asan Engineering Building, as well as a brief tour of the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC). The visit is expected to establish collaboration between Brazilian universities, which are working hard to foster talented youth, and Ewha, which is supporting a number of projects to produce the first Korean female Nobel Prize recipient in science.
