The‘Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra’ held a performance titled ‘Rachmaninov Piano Music Series Ⅰ’ in the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on May 3rd (Fri‧8pm).

Ewha Philharmonic, well known as the first university orchestra in Korea to be comprised of graduates and enrolled students, performed for the first time in Seoul Arts Center. While the orchestra has performed four times both inside and outside of school thus far this year, this is their first performance in the Seoul Arts Center open to the general public.

In this performance, the Ewha Philharmonic played with three world-famous male pianists- Peter Ovcharov, Aviram Reichert, and Miroslav Kultyshev- to commemorate S. Rachmaninoff’s 140th birthday. The performance program was composed of Rachmaninoff’s main piano concerto, which demonstrated Russian lyrical music style through its majestic scale. It is uncommon to play Rachmaninoff’s well-known pieces in one performance, which is one reason why the performance drew attention from the outset.

Ewha Philharmonic, under Professor Gi Sun Seong (Orchestral Music) as conductor, received huge applause from 2,200 people after successfully playing ‘Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini Op.43, ‘Piano Concerto No.2’, and‘Piano Concerto No.3.’

Ewha President Sun-Uk Kim, Vice President Jin-Ho Choi, President of the Alumni Association Jong-Nam Jo, Dean of College of Music Young-Rim Ham, Former Dean of College of Music Mun-Kyung Pae and many more attended the performance to encourage the Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra, which is constantly taking on new challenges. The Ewha Philharmonic, with its 80 graduates and enrolled students, seeks to nurture creative playing style and create highly qualified musicians through wide-ranged repertoire and innovative performances.
