The JoongAng Ilbo, one of Korea’s most influential newspapers, announced on Sept. 03 (Mon) ~ 4 (Tues) that Ewha’s Departments of Sociology, Mathematics, Physics, and Environmental Engineering rose to the top of a national evaluation carried out by the newspaper.

Mathematics, Physics and Environmental Engineering departments were ranked exclusively on the top levels among all the other universities in Korea, indicating the success of 'Science Ewha' project of the university to strengthen competitiveness in these area. Sociology was highly ranked two year consecutively from 2011. In addition, departments of History, Nutritional Science & Food Management, Statistics are also ranked in high level this year cementing its reputation at the top of these fields in the nation.

Among all private universities included in the evaluation Ewha received the number one ranking in Mathematics, Physics, and Environmental Engineering. In May 2011, Ewha signed an agreement with the global chemical company Solvay and became the first university to cooperate with an international industry. In August, Ewha also started ‘Ewha Global Top 5 Project’ by investing 100 billion won (around 88 million USD) over the course three years to base its special R&D and forced Science Ewha’s potential.

The Department of Mathematics, which specializes in applied mathematics with a basis of pure mathematics, has been particularly successful in engaging in doctoral level research collaboration. As a result, the department is ranked number one in internal and external research funding among all other universities, and also received the high scores in scholarship and low attrition rate.

The criterion used in the 2012 evaluation was different from past years, requiring the universities to have a high score across all areas in order to receive a high overall score. The four departments that received the top ranking-Physics, Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, and Sociology- are therefore shown to demonstrate consistent excellence across all areas evaluated.
