Ewha Orchestra Makes Grand Debut on International Stage

The Ewha Womans University orchestra, composed of College of Music students, travelled to Saarbrücken, Germany from July 26 to August 9, 2012, to participate in the Musicalta Festival at the invitation of University of Music Saarland. During their two-week stay they gave several performances, including at the Hochschule für Musik (HFM) in Saarbrücken nd at the Alsace Rouffach.

The all-female orchestra’s July 29th performance in Saarbrücken, at the Basilica of St. John, was led by conductor Prof. Ki Sung-Sun and featured a repertoire with works by JS Bach, WA Mozart and Richard Strauss. Soloists were the HFM oboist Maksym Malkov and Ewha’s Han Wang.

Ewha Womans University has a long tradition at the forefront of music. It founded the first music department at a Korean university in 1925, expanding to become a College of Music in 1960. For many decades the College of Music has played a central role in the musical life of Korea and made ​​an important contribution to training in Western as well as traditional Korean music.

Since its inception, the Ewha Orchestra has performed numerous concerts throughout Korea, and this is its first international tour. In 2012 the orchestra was invited to the first annual festival of the Korean Symphony Orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center, and received rave reviews for its performances. The conductor of the orchestra, Prof. Ki Sung-Sun, has worked with many world renowned orchestras and conductors and is considered a viola virtuoso.
