President Kim Strengthens EU-Korea Science Collaboration During German Tour

President Kim Sun-Uk participated in the EU-Korea Conference on Science and Technology (EKC) in Berlin, Germany from 26-28 July, 2012, co-hosted by the Korean Scientists and Engineers Association of Germany (VeKNI) and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST). The EKC is held annually, bringing together engineers and scientists from nine European countries as well as Korea to discuss recent progress and future trends in science and technology.

Approximately 500 people attended this year’s conference, which focused on future trends in science and technology. EKC 2012 was the 5th edition of the conference, which was launched in Heidelberg in 2008 at the co-organization of the Korean Scientists and Engineers Associations in Germany (VeKNI), in UK (KSEAUK), in France (ASCoF) and in Austria (KOSEAA).

President Kim delivered the keynote address at the conference, using the occasion to communicate Ewha’s commitment to training top women scientists and outlining Ewha’s initiatives in the areas of science and technology that have made it the ‘Cradle of Future Leaders in Science & Technology’.

In her keynote address, President Kim emphasized the importance of women’s participation in science and engineering, highlighting that Ewha has a number of excellent women scientists actively involved with training and supporting the next generation of women scientists and making advancements in the field. “It is our great hope,” she said, “that the future of science and technology is shaped by the brilliant minds of these emerging women leaders.” Ewha will continue to work tirelessly to champion the advancement and participation of women in science and to strengthen the network and support necessary to bring this dream to fruition.

In addition to her role in the conference, on July 27 President Kim visited the Bertelsmann Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the common good through promotion of competition and civic engagement, where she participated roundtable discussion on university evaluation systems with Dr. Christian Berthold (CHE Consultants). To cap off her mission in Germany, she met with Dr. phil. Dorothea Rüland and Dr. Margret Wintermantel, Secretary General and President (respectively) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and agreed to strengthen the network between Germany and Korea.

President Kim Sun-Uk has a long-term connection to Germany, as a fluent speaker of German language and an alumna of the University of Konstanz (LL.D., Administrative Law). She is the current Chair of the Alumninetzwerk Deutschland–Korea (ADeKo), a network of alumni of German institutions residing in Korea.
