Bryn Mawr President McAuliffe Gives Lecture at Ewha

On Thursday, June 7, Bryn Mawr President Jane McAuliffe visited Ewha to give a special lecture to Ewha students as well as sign a MoU and attend a luncheon hosted by the President of Ewha, Dr.jur. Kim Sun-Uk.

Her lecture, titled The Next Wave: Disruption, Transition, and a New Global Era for Women’s Advancement, focused on the distinctive opportunities of the present moment for women around the world as well as the challenges still ahead, and various ways in which current momentum can be sustained and benefits more evenly distributed.

Her lecture also explored the notable shifts in economic and political power, social structures and information flows that have taken place in the 21st century and the opportunities for women’s advancement that have resulted. According to President McAuliffe, these disruptions are evidence of a new era in women’s advancement at both a national and international level, presenting a unique environment for women’s advancement.

In this lecture, President McAuliffe emphasized the need to strengthen women’s solidarity among nations, while observing that the purpose of higher education for women has radically shifted from cultivating women’s capacity as to help people in the margins of society to training women-power essential in the development of the society as a whole.

The lecture, which was attended by around 70 students from the Department of English Language and Literature at Ewha, was followed by a question and answer session.

In addition to delivering a thought-provoking lecture, President McAuliffe’s visit was also an occasion to formally sign a memorandum of understanding between Ewha Womans University and Bryn Mawr College. The agreement, signed by President McAuliffe and President Kim Sun-Uk, will bolster existing collaborations between the two universities as well as open a pathway for student exchange and further cooperation.

Ewha and Bryn Mawr have enjoyed a close relationship and a shared history of excellence in women’s education. Bryn Mawr, founded just one year before Ewha in 1885, is a women's liberal arts college located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The school has an enrollment of about 1300 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students and is part of the Seven Sister colleges, a group of seven liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States that are historically women's colleges. Ewha shares a close bond with all seven sisters, collaborating on a variety of initiatives including student exchanges, teaching, and research. The Seven Sister colleges include Bryn Mawr College, Barnard College, Mount Holyoke College, Radcliffe College, Smith College, Vassar College, and Wellesley College.

President Jane McAuliffe is the eighth President of Bryn Mawr College, beginning her tenure in July 2008. Before that, she served as Dean of Georgetown College at Georgetown University from 1999 to 2008.
