Ewha Womans University Confers Honorary Doctoral Degree on Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile

Ewha has conferred an honorary doctoral degree on Michelle Bachelet, president of Chile at LG Convention Hall on November 11.

President Lee Bae-Yong said, "She has performed excellent leadership as a female president. She also contributed in enhancing rights of the underprivileged and realizing the gender equality."

Michelle Bachelet started her career as a medical specialist in the field of children and public health care at the Protection of Children Damaged by States of Emergency(PIDEE) in 1983. In 2000, she improved the public health care policy to benefit mothers and children as a Health Minister and in 2002, she cleared the remnants of the military dictatorship as the first female Minister of Defense in Chile. On these political backgrounds, she won the 2006 presidential election as the first female president of Chile. A moderate socialist, she increased social benefits to help reduce the country's gap between the rich and the poor, one of the largest in the world.

President Michelle Bachelet said, "It is an honor to be awarded the honorary doctoral degree at Ewha Womans University, the largest women's university that has lead the development of women rights and enhanced the status of women in Korea."

In her acceptance speech she also said, "A good policy for women is the good policy for the nation. Although we have achieved gender equality comparing to the old days, the glass ceiling that has existed in various fields including politics will disappear and it will become the start of a better society where women can show thier potentials .
