Ewha Womans University Awards Honorary Doctoral Degree to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge

Ewha has awarded an honorary doctoral degree to professor Alison Richard, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge at LG Convention Hall on October 22.

President Lee Bae-Yong said, "Professor Alison Richard the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge devoted in developing equal human society through expanding international exchanges and performed leadership in university innovation as the first women vice chancellor of 800 years of history of the University of Cambridge" as she conferred the degree.

Professor Alison Richard was installed as the 344th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge on 1 October 2003. The Vice-Chancellor is the principal academic and administrative officer of the University, and Professor Richard is the first woman to hold the position full-time.

At Cambridge, Professor Richard has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign for £1 billion to underpin and augment core expenditure, introduced new measures for the stewardship of the University's investments, and developed a bursary fund to ensure that undergraduate students and applicants are not disadvantaged by the national introduction of higher university tuition fees. She has also sponsored internal policy initiatives, including a review of Cambridge's international relationships and its international student policy.

Professor Alison Richard said, "When a university awards a degree, it marks a milestone in the life and learning of an individual. As a recipient today, I am very proud and very happy to have this great honour bestowed on me – and I end my remarks with warm and sincere thanks to Ewha Womans University for the award. Ewha Womans University and the University of Cambridge share some common features in that they have long tradition and the great history of development. I hope this conferment becomes an opportunity to understand the culture and the spirit of the two universities."

Ewha Womans University and the University of Cambridge agreed to discuss expanding exchanges in the field of Korean Studies and Natural Science as well as initiating exchange and summer school program.

As the following event of the ceremony, president Lee Bae-Yong and professor Alison Richard visited the Ewha Archive and Changdeokgung Palace together. As a historian, president Lee Bae-Yong explained the values of the history of Korea and Ewha. Professor Alison Richard said, "Although the University of Cambridge has a history of 800 years, its education for women started at the end of 19th century. It is very impressive that Ewha and Cambridge started women education in the same period. It was a wonderful time learning the history of Korean women education of Ewha and the wisdom and the beauty of Korean cultural heritage."
