Ewha Commemorates Mary F. Scranton, the Pioneer of Modern Education to the Women of Korea

Ewha Womans University has hosted a series of events last week to remember Mary Fletcher Scranton, the founder of Ewha, who passed away on October 8, 1909.

Events were prepared to observe the works of Mary F. Scranton and commemorate the spirit of Scranton who has sowed a seed for the poor and the sick in Korea. They include Scranton memorial chapels, a memorial service on October 7th, an academic symposium and visiting Yangwhajin cemetery for foreign missionaries where she is buried.

Scranton came to Seoul in 1885, when she was 52, and started to teach a student at her house in 1886. She started a Sunday school at Ewha Haktang, the first-ever girl's school in Korea in Jeongdong from 1888. Through the school, she fostered a number of talented females in various fields of medicine, education and missionary work. The girl's school has today developed into Ewha Womans University, the largest women-only university in the world.

This year, Ewha invited eight descendants of Scranton after having searched for the founder's offsprings over the past 20 years and they attended the memorial service on October 7th. The Scranton descendants met with Ewha students at the memorial chapel on October 5th and 6th. There also was a 'Symposium in Commemoration of the Honorable Mary F. Scranton' held in the LG Convention Hall on October 8th. The theme of the symposium was on 'The Honorable Mary Scranton's Journey of Life and Her Spirit of Women's Education.'

"Our school has conducted research on Scranton and found three important things. First, she was already a very global person as she called Korean people 'my people' in 1885. Second, she had a vision of the big picture; what she wanted to truly realize was global peace through gender equality. Lastly, she showed love for Korean women. She was dedicated fully to Korean women regardless of a lot of difficulties and her love has made the world's largest women's university,'' said Lee Bae-Yong, president of Ewha Womans University.

In addition to the events above, Ewha Archive has started a special exhibition in commemoration of Mary F. Scranton and also, a memorial art wall is displayed at the main gate to commemorate her founding spirit of Ewha.
