Ewha Hosts the 2014 International Congress of Women Mathematicians

The first International Congress of Women Mathematicians (ICWM) was held as a two-day event at Ewha Womans University and the COEX convention center on August 12 and 14, respectively.
Organized under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the ICWM 2014 brought together approximately 500 women mathematicians from some 50 countries and featured lectures and presentations by renowned scholars.
Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee for the ICWM 2014, Prof. Noh Sunsook (Mathematics Education) said, “Hosting this international conference is a matter of great honor for the field of mathematics in Korea, which has recently seen some remarkable progress; I hope that this event will serve an opportunity to share mathematical and educational accomplishments with female mathematicians not only from developing countries but also from across the entire world.”
In particular, the conference was widely acclaimed as a display of female prowess in mathematics, following the announcement of the first female recipient of the 2014 Fields Medal, which is often described as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics.”
