photoThe coming September is due to see the establishment and commencement of operations for a new King Sejong Institute (KSI), located at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, U.S., as part of the effort to promote Korean language education and Korean culture in Midwestern United States. The Iowa City King Sejong Institute will be the sixth of its kind to be founded in the U.S.

Established by the Korean government as a statutory mandate, the KSI is tasked with the overseas education of the Korean language and culture, in response to the growing demand for Korean language learning caused by trends such as the rising popularity of Korean pop culture, an increase in international marriages, and entry into overseas markets by Korean businesses. In 2014, a total of 70 universities and institutions underwent the assessment process conducted by the King Sejong Institute Foundation for designation to host KSI projects, which resulted in the official designation of 17 universities and institutions including Ewha.

In March 2001, Ewha became the first university in Korea to establish a Division of International Studies and has since contributed to fostering human resources specialized in international issues. Ewha is also planning to add Global Korean Studies in 2015 as a new major degree to produce professional global leaders equipped with a proficient understanding of Korean culture and language. By participating in the foundation and management of the new KSI in the U.S., Ewha expects to spread its accumulated wealth of educational achievements in relation to the Korean language and culture and to further expand its global capacity.
