Special Lecture Series of Innovation Ewha: “From Leisure to Weisure: Talking about the Future” by Prof. Won Hyung-joong

The third lecture in the culture and art field for the Special Lecture Series of Innovation Ewha, in which the best lecturers are invited, was held on October 28 at Emerson Chapel. This lecture was titled “From Leisure to Weisure: Talking About the Future” with Prof. Won Hyung-joong (Division of Human Movement Studies), a researcher on leisure who majored in physical education and earned a doctorate in leisure studies for the first time in Korea.
“Despite improvements in income, neither the young, the middle-aged, nor the elderly in Korea have become any happier,” Prof. Won said. “According to research on happiness, people become immersed when they enjoy leisure activities, and the level of immersion and the level of happiness are in direct proportion. Therefore, the key to happiness is leisure,” he added.
“Rather than being a state of not working or just having free time or participating in conspicuous consumption, leisure is a pleasant state of mind created by participating in an activity that one chooses voluntarily,” the professor said. “Most Koreans are not accustomed to changing from a work-centered life to a leisure-centered one, so to have a happy and healthy life, it’s necessary to improve the level of immersion and preparedness for enjoying leisure activities.” The Special Lecture Series of Innovation Ewha can be viewed on the YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/ewhauniv).
