Beverley McLachlin, First Woman Chief Justice of Canada, Visits Ewha

On March 11, 2016, Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, the first woman to hold the position, paid a visit to Ewha Womans University.

McLachlin, who was sworn in as a Chief Justice in January 2000 and has since been holding the position over the last 16 years, met Ewha President Choi Kyunghee on Friday. Other participants in this meeting included Frank McArdle, McLachlin’s husband and executive director of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association; Oh Soo Geun, the dean of Ewha Law School; Choi Kyung-suk, the head for planning and evaluation of Ewha Law School; Park Ihn-hwi, the director for the Office of International Affairs at Ewha; and Hwang Inseong, the Director General for International Affairs of the Office of Court Administration in the Supreme Court of Korea.
Chief Justice McLachlin delivered a special lecture titled “Gender Equality: The Canadian Experience” at Ewha Law School at 3 p.m. on the same day. In this lecture, she talked about political rights, right to hold public office, and substantive equality rights and explained the history of women's struggle for suffrage in the West.
