On October 21, the Ewha Institute of Unification Studies, directed by Kim Seok Hyang, and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) co-hosted a seminar titled “Life under East German Dictatorship and the Example of the Korean Peninsula (Alltag in der Diktatur).”
This seminar is the third event jointly organized by the two as part of their long standing academic cooperation with the last one held in 2013.
Established in 1955, the non-profit foundation was renamed in 1964 after the first Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to commemorate his leading role in Germany’s Christian democracy and his conviction to the ideology. Thinking highly of Ewha Womans University and the Institute of Unification Studies for the efforts to foster young female leaders and advance academic research in unification and North Korean studies, KAS has partnered and consistently cooperated with the University and the Institute.

This year’s seminar focused on observing the daily lives of North Koreans and those of East Germans to figure out the course of life of the both. The purpose was to look squarely at the lives of East Germans prior to the unification and those of North Koreans today, and analyze the meanings of the observation.
