Ewha-Rostock 2016 SARU Program Held to Discuss Issues Involving Korea’s Reunification

The opening ceremony for the “Ewha-Rostock 2016 SARU” program, co-organized by Ewha Womans University and University of Rostock in Germany, took place on July 7 (Thur.).
The program, bringing together about 40 students from a total of seven countries including Korea and Germany and nearly 20 renowned scholars from home and abroad, was held for two weeks from July 6 (Wed.) to July 17 (Sun.).
The SARU (Summer Academy Reunification) is a summer school program that University of Rostock designed to cover a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, including politics, history, demographic changes, economic systems, human resource cultivation and language problems, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. With almost 600 years of history, University of Rostock is not only one of the prestigious universities representing the former East Germany, but also a leading research-oriented German university with around 15,000 students.
Ewha sent 13 undergraduate and graduate students to the first SARU program held in July 2015 at the German university, who successfully completed the educational course. Students of both Ewha and University of Rostock visit each other’s school every two years so as to take part in the program, and thus, ten students and seven professors from the German institution visited the Ewha campus in 2016.
The second SARU program held at Ewha was focused on applying the experience and lessons of German reunification to the situation on the Korean Peninsula and actively publicizing the necessity for peaceful Korean reunification and commitment to preparing for it to university students who will lead the international community in the future. A number of experts on the reunification of the Korean Peninsula as well as professors from the two schools participated in the program and had in-depth discussions through a variety of seminars, workshops and panel debates; the participants also went on a field trip to sites regarding reunification, including the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Imjingak, and experienced Korean culture.
