1Ewha Womans University awarded an honorary doctoral degree of medicine to Denis Mukwege, 2018 Nobel Peace laureate, on July 1.

President Kim Heisook said, “Dr. Denis Mukwege treated women raped by armed rebels during the Congo Wars, ensuring safety and medical treatment for tens of thousands of female patients in Congo. His achievements tremendously contributed to the protection of women’s rights.”

Dr. Denis Mukwege has been dedicated to treating and rehabilitating thousands of women who fell victim to rape and sexual assault during the wars since he founded Panzi Hospital in Congo in 1999. Due to his contribution, he was named African of the Year in 2009 and Fortune magazine’s one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders” in 2016, and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Denis Mukwege said, “Ewha Womans University has long exerted every effort to provide higher education exclusively for women and thus expand their capabilities, and this was the right choice. Like Ewha, Panzi Hospital and Panzi Foundation located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo give priority to women’s health and education.” He added, “I am honored to receive the honorary doctoral degree from the future-oriented Ewha Womans University.”

Along with Dr. Denis Mukwege, Ewha awarded its honorary doctoral degrees to former Finnish President Tarja Kaarina Halonen in 2002, former Irish President Mary McAleese in 2005, former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet in 2009, German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2010, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2015, and Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid in 2018.
